Dear
Friends of Sylvia Glickman and of Hildegard:
2011 is coming to a close; the season of holidays and annual
giving is upon us…again (!)
The Institute and the Sylvia Glickman Memorial Fund also come to you
again to ask for your help.
In the past year the Hildegard Institute
continued its important activities in support of the cause of
women in music. We continue to honor Sylvia's calling, supporting music
by women composers, past and present, with several groups of musicians,
in addition to our “Institute group in-residence,” the Hildegard Chamber
Players. We continue to
launch exciting new initiatives.
Again, to continue this work, we
must ask you for your financial support.
Our major project in the past year has been re-scoring Sylvia’s
1997 work for chamber orchestra, "Carved in Courage," for string
quartet. This work is
nearing completion. Since
Sylvia herself re-scored her
1993 work, "The Walls Are Quiet Now," we have the makings of an intimate
chamber music program, which memorializes the Holocaust, and which can
be performed more widely than before.
This project requires special financial support to bring to
completion and schedule a major performance…we are negotiating dates in
Philadelphia and New York. But the big news is that it will be premiered
at the Delaware Chamber Music Festival in Wilmington, Delaware, in June
2012, by Barbara Govatos and members of the Hildegard Chamber Players.
Other important projects and initiatives the Institute is working on:
The Hildegard Institute again supported – wholly or in part – concerts
featuring women composers in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, and in the two
Wilmingtons: in Delaware and
in North Carolina. In Bala
Cynwyd, the concert featured the Hildegard Chamber Players, the
continuing group founded by Sylvia, whose combinations of personnel are
drawn from the Philadelphia Orchestra, and whose artistic director is
Barbara Govatos, Taylor Chair in the first violin section.**
This concert, in the Bala Cynwyd Library (Sylvia served on the
Board of Directors), is now the annual
Sylvia Glickman Memorial Concert, which keynotes the library
series.
The Memorial Fund continues to support the annual Sylvia Glickman prize
with the International Alliance of Women in Music (IAWM) for a new
chamber work, by an unpublished woman composer over 40, to be considered
for publication by Hildegard Publishing Company, and for performance by
the Hildegard Chamber Players. The winners and honorable mention are
noted on the Institute website.
The Sylvia Glickman prize at Haverford College has been endowed and is
offered annually to a worthy graduating chamber music student at the
College. This prize honors Sylvia, who inaugurated the Chamber Music
program there and directed it for many years. The Sylvia Glickman
scholarship for a woman piano student continues at the Royal Academy of
Music in London, where Sylvia won a prize and received a Licentiate
degree. The winner in 2011/12 is Nikki Franklin, who is studying for a
Master’s in Music Composition.
Many of you receiving this letter have contributed to the
Institute and to the awards memorializing Sylvia. The Institute is in
your debt. Please consider the work of the Institute once more as you
make your charitable contributions this year.
Please do so by sending a check to the Hildegard Institute (memo
“sg memorial,” if for that fund in particular). Otherwise, please use
the PayPal button on the donations page of the Hildegard website. We are
a 501(c)3 charitable foundation and all contributions are tax
deductible.
If you prefer, you may donate by
mail, by sending a check to the Hildegard Institute, at the address at
the top of this letter.
Best wishes for the holidays,
Harvey Glickman and the Board of the Hildegard
Institute
P.S. We also know that many of you are actively involved in the world of
women and the arts, and music; we are eager to hear new ideas you may
have for future Institute activities and initiatives.
The Institute exists to be of service to this community.
Just send me a message via e-mail or through the regular mail, if
you feel so inclined.
P.P.S. On request, I will send you the CD of Sylvia's "The Walls are
Quiet Now." For all this,
many thanks. And thank you for all your help and support in the past. I
wish you a happy and healthy new year --from me and the whole Glickman
family.
**We mourn the loss of the
husband of Barbara Govatos, Julian Rodescu, whose magnificent basso
voice is featured in
Sylvia’s CD, “Carved in Courage” (2001).
Activities Report 2010-2011
Dear Friends of Sylvia Glickman and of Hildegard:
The Hildegard Institute and its President had an exciting year. Much to our delight, a new film about Hildegard herself, "...a forward thinking and iconoclastic pioneer..." made in Germany, came out in October, and was shown in art houses in US east coast cities. Alas, we received no royalties!
The Hildegard Institute supported — wholly or in part — concerts featuring women composers at Haverford College, and in two Wilmingtons: Delaware and North Carolina. Two of these concerts featured the Hildegard Chamber Players, the continuing group founded by Sylvia Glickman, whose personnel are drawn from the Philadelphia Orchestra, and whose artistic director is Barbara Govatos, Taylor Chair in the first violin section.
Another concert, in the Bala Cywyd Library, honored Sylvia Glickman, the second director of the Library's music program; it was led by Roberto Diaz, violist, now President of the Curtis Institute. This turned out to be the inauguration of the Sylvia Glickman Memorial Concert Series in the Library, which will continue in 2011 and, we hope, beyond. (For details see the "News" section of our website.) The Institute's Sylvia Glickman Memorial Fund and members of the Glickman family are supporting this series, but it requires much more help if it is to be sustained. (State budget cuts in all library support have severely impacted all auxiliary programs at all libraries in Pennsylvania.)
The Memorial Fund continues to support the annual Sylvia Glickman prize with the International Alliance of Women in Music (IAWM) for a new chamber work, by an unpublished woman composer over 40, to be considered for publication by Hildegard Publishing Company and for performance by the Hildegard Chamber Players. The winners and honorable mention are noted on the Institute website.

We have set up a PayPal donation page, which you can use to make a donation on the Hildegard website. If you prefer, you may donate by mail, by sending a check to:

I believe we have been making some progress in achieving recognition for women composers, especially those of the past. Nevertheless, if you examine the year's programming of your "garden variety" orchestra or chamber music series, I challenge you to find more than one or two women composers earlier than 1950 on any of the programs. What was inspiring, this past year, is hearing and viewing the Camerata Philadelphia, a dynamic, young chamber music group — three handsome men—playing an all women's program in a jewel box of a church by the seaside in Wilmington, North Carolina. Sylvia would have been proud!
Many of you receiving this letter have contributed to the Institute and to the awards memorializing Sylvia. Again I thank you. Please consider the work of the Institute once more as you make your charitable contributions this year.
